Answer by Kelvin Ho, owner of a grumpy shiba inu: Shiba inus are awesome dogs, and they definitely have very unique personalities. Shibas tend to really love their owners but not care so much

A Shiba Inu can be a good dog for a first time owner if they are well trained and well socialized. But, owning a Shiba Inu is not as easy as owning a Labrador Retriever or Golden Retriever. Shiba Inus make good family dogs if you can put in the time and patience. If trained right, they can be smart and affectionate companion for a first time
After about 4 months of consistent training and advice from our professional (former) trainer my Shiba now will now come when called, sit for the order, and then go about when given permission. This is complicated stuff for Shiba Inus because they don't want to do it. You need to lay the ground work for him. I would start with really basic stuff. Go visit r/shiba and do a LOT of research to make sure the breed actually fits for you. Ask questions there, and several Shiba owners will give you their input based on real life experiences. Even better, try to speak to breeders and meet their dogs because their personalities do differ dog from dog, but many traits are consistent within the breed.

Mariโ€™s story was made into a Japanese movie called โ€œA Tale of Mari and Her Three Puppies .โ€. 8. Shibas have cat-like qualities. In many ways, the Shiba Inu is more like a cat than a dog

The Shiba Inu is extremely clean, so grooming is required minimally. Theyโ€™re a lot like cats โ€“ and most people do not groom their cats very much. Most Shiba Inus do not like water, which makes bathing difficult. (Much like a cat, again.) However, we recommend getting them used to water when they are young to make bathing easier later. In 1991-'97, 553 Shibas were examined and the results sent to CERF. Of those examined, 454 dogs, or 82.10 percent were considered normal, while 99 dogs, or 17.90 percent were afflicted with one or more problems. Interestingly, only 14.52 percent of the males examined were afflicted, while 20.51 percent of the females had a problem. Exercise and Activity Needs. As an active breed, the Shiba Inus requires moderate activity and exercise (Coile, 286). Most experts agree that these dogs need approximately 30โ€“60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis. This can include brisk walks, one-on-one play sessions, light jogs, games, and various activities.
The normal shedding process and the blowing coat. A day-to-day normal shedding helps in the removal of dead and damaged fur and replenishes the coat to keep it healthy. Blowing coat refers to a much greater amount of shedding. Over the course of three to eight weeks, Shiba Inus will shed their fluffy undercoat.
